HOW TO LOSE WEIGHT By Melanie Reid
Melanie has
worked as a fitness instructor and has been a runner up in Miss City of Durham,
Miss Figure and Miss Athletic.
Never miss breakfast. If you miss breakfast then your metabolism will slow right down so that it is harder to lose weight. Many people who want to lose weight are those who skip breakfast..
The stomach and spleen are stronger in the morning and you have the rest of the day to burn off calories. If you avoid eating breakfast then a signal goes to your brain which interprets food as being scarce which causes stress hormones to be released in the body.
As a consequence muscle tissue is shed to decrease the body’s requirement for food. Afterwards when you do eat , more insulin is released into the body to make more fat as food may be scarce.
Breakfast and lunch should be the largest meals as you will burn off calories during the day when you are most active.
Don’t skip meals as this will slow down your metabolism and you will lose lean tissue.
Eat small portions frequently to keep blood sugar levels stable which will reduce food cravings.
Avoid eating late at night because the body stores fat during sleep.
Avoid fad diets because dieting slows down the metabolic enzyme function in the body. Therefore fat cells bloat, become toxic and store in your tissues. Muscle tone is lost and you become depressed..
Eat a healthy balanced diet that is high in nutrients and ditch the refined and processed foods.
Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables, raw nuts, seeds, vegetables, sea vegetables, grains, beans, fresh herbs, fish, tofu and fruit and drink herbal teas and plenty of water.
The herbs cinnamon, ginger, cayenne, cardamon and ginseng help weight loss
Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Water is a natural appetite suppressant. A good weight loss tea is nettle tea as it has diuretic properties and supports metabolism..
Drink a cup of hot water and lemon first thing in the morning to boost the metabolism.

Detox - avoid toxins as these are stored in fatty tissue. If you have a lot of toxins you may have a higher fat to muscle ratio which makes it harder to lose weight.
Cut out sugar as it lowers the metabolism
Avoid dairy products as they are difficult to digest.
Avoid wheat as they contain high levels of gluten which are difficult to digest.
Avoid alcohol as this weakens the liver which is the main organ for fat metabolism. Alcohol stimulates your appetite and is full of sugar.
Cut down on salt as this causes fluid retention. Use sea salt as a healthy alternative.
Avoid bad saturated fats such as red meat and butter as they lead to weight gain.
Eat EFA’s essential fatty acids such as avocados, nuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, fish and vegetables as they boost the metabolism which speed weight loss
Avoid grains with dairy or meat, fruit with vegetables, fruit with meals and fruit with grain or dairy as this causes gas. Undigested foods turn into fat balls of toxins and cellulite.
Eat fruit by itself, grains with vegetables, pasta with vegetables, fish or meat with vegetables and pulses or beans with grains as it is the most effective way to burn fat.
Test for food allergies and intolerances as certain foods may be causing weight gain.
Test for nutrient deficiencies and take a nutrient supplement. If you are deficient in nutrients it will promote weight gain.
Make sure you get enough sleep as lack of sleep leads to weight gain.
Exercise – it increases metabolism and helps to burn fat. Aim to do at least 30 mins of exercise 5 times a week., e.g dancing, walking, swimming, skipping, aerobics, jogging etc.

Dieting sounds like common sense.. I do try to exercise. I just get bored late
at night and like some cheese and stuff to go with my bottle (sorry glass) of
wine. How does a man over 40 get a six pack?
Mel says:
When you say you try to exercise how much exercise do you try to do?
If you are bored late at night you could do some sit ups then it will help you
sleep too.
As for the cheese and wine you may have too much yeast in your diet. Cheese and
wine are full of yeast. This affects the digestive system so you may be bloated
especially if your abdomen is hard. If it is soft then you have some fat. Eating
late at night will make you store more calories. Alcohol and dairy are rich in
calories. I would suggest you cut down on your cheese and wine, limit yourself
to 1 glass a day as opposed to 1 bottle. Greek Feta cheese made from goats milk
or sheeps milk is preferable to cows milk is hard to digest. Houmous is another
good alternative to cheese.Snack on fruit at night as this will clean your
system. However I wouldn’t recommend dried fruit such as dates, figs, raisins
and apricots as they are rich in yeast. So only eat dried fruit in moderation.
If you want to cleanse your system from yeast try an acidophollus supplement or
pau d’arco for 6 months, you can also make it as a tea..
As for trying to exercise aim to do 30 mins of exercise 5 times a week. As you
are in your 40s I would recommend gentle exercises like walking or swimming. For
your 6 pack you need to do sit ups.
Good luck
